The koru is the Māori name given to the new unfurling fern frond and symbolises new life, growth, strength and peace. The symbolism of the koru as stated above resonates with the resettlement hopes of our communities from refugee backgrounds.

Auckland Regional Public Health Service: Refugee Health and Screening Service

The Refugee Health and Screening Service is part of the Auckland Regional Public Health Service (ARPHS). The service covers the greater Auckland region. Public health plays a major role in supporting and strengthening healthy communities including refugees and new migrants.

The Refugee Health and Screening Service provides information, education, communicable diseases control, health protection and health promotion. The Refugee Health and Screening Service works in partnership with many health providers and communities to provide culturally appropriate and acceptable care.

  • Free Cultural and Linguistically Diverse training
    The Cultural and Linguistically Diversity (CALD) resource website provides a platform for health practitioners to access free resources and online CALD training.

  • New Ministry of Women's Affairs Report on Case Studies of Community Initiatives Addressing Family Violence in Refugee and Migrant Communities.

  • The release of two new research reports, on Asian, refugee and migrant mental health and addiction, each with important implications for service delivery, therapy and workforce development in New Zealand.
